Marriages
A marriage license may be purchased in any county in NC and be used statewide. The license is valid for 60 days from the date issued. Certified copies of marriage license may be obtained from the county in which you received your license.
Hours
Marriage licenses are issued between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding Holidays. Please allow approximately 15-20 minutes to process the marriage license.
Fees
The fee for the license is $60.00, non-refundable. Only cash, money orders, or cashier's check are accepted. At this time we are unable to accept Credit or Debit cards.
Requirements
Both applicants must provide valid government issued identification with photo and Social Security Card/ Print out from Social Security Office or a notarized affidavit that states “I have not been issued a social security number by the US government and I am not eligible to obtain one”. The affidavit is available in the Register of Deeds office.
Applicants 16 or 17 years of age must have their legal guardian present, with a state issued photo ID, at the time the licenses are issued along with certified copies of their birth certificate or custody papers.
If either applicant has been previously married we will need to see a copy of your divorce papers or date of death of previous spouse.
Identification Requirements
Identification may consist of a current driver's license or valid state photo ID, valid passport, INS registration with certified copy of birth certificate. If you have never been issued a social security number from the United States you will need to provide a government issued photo ID along with a certified copy of your birth certificate.
