This office provides many services to all walks of life, whether the professional community or the general public All documents pertaining to land transactions are recorded and maintained in this office. This office also issues marriage licenses, administers notary oaths, retains military discharges, cemetery records, plats, genealogy information, as well as other useful information.

Gates County was formed in 1779 from Perquimans County, Chowan County, and Hertford County. Part of the Drum Hill area was once part of the State of Virginia. The City of Suffolk would have records for Nansemond COunty, Virginia.
